Linking Skills to Building Renovation Passports: A Key Step in One Click Reno
As part of the OneClickRENO project, a new deliverable focused on the crucial link between specific professional skills requirements and Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) in Building Renovation Passports (BRPs) has been released. This step is essential to ensuring that building owners can identify the right professionals to execute renovation measures effectively. By aligning the skills of craftsmen with European and internationally recognised standards, the deliverable supports high-quality renovations while addressing country-specific contexts.
The deliverable outlines a methodology that connects the ECMs proposed in BRPs with specific skill requirements, helping homeowners and building managers identify qualified professionals for their renovation projects. The methodology is based on:
European standards such as ESCO and internationally recognised frameworks like Bloom’s taxonomy to define occupations and required skills.
Country-specific considerations, ensuring that the methodology is adaptable to the unique renovation landscapes in the whole country of Ireland, Spain (Valencia region), Italy (Emilia-Romagna region), and the whole country of the Netherlands .
An independent, transferable approach, enabling implementation beyond the One Click Reno project—i.e. Greece is already exploring how to replicate and apply these insights within its own ecosystem.
In developing this methodology, the One Click Reno project team also identified additional specialised skills that craftsmen must possess beyond those outlined in standard classifications. These extra skills are critical to ensuring the proper application of ECMs, bridging the gap between formal training and real-world renovation needs.
One of the key challenges for homeowners is not just knowing which skills are needed but also how to find certified professionals. This deliverable provides guidance on identifying well-trained craftsmen, ensuring they are properly qualified and, ideally, certified for the ECMs they implement.
The report also serves as a step-by-step guide for defining skill sets in other renovation ecosystems across Europe. By using the tools and methods developed within the One Click Reno project, particularly those created by ISSO, one of the project partners, other regions can systematically identify and verify the skills needed for deep renovations.
During the development of this methodology, the project partners gained valuable insights:
Construction knowledge is essential: To define accurate skill sets, at least a moderate understanding of construction practices is necessary. Relying solely on external knowledge can lead to gaps or misinterpretations.
Local context matters: Each country, and even each region, has specific building practices. A one-size-fits-all approach does not work, and direct engagement with local stakeholders is key to refining skill descriptions.
A structured, digital approach is needed: Since the information will be delivered via the One Click Reno Tool, it is crucial to design a data structure that allows for flexibility. The information is organised into small, clearly labelled data points, ensuring adaptability for future updates.
Inclusive language is essential: The project aims to attract both diverse professionals, from genders and sociocultural backgrounds.Future work will focus on ensuring the language used in the tool is gender-inclusive and does justice to the diversity of renovation professionals.
This work on skills and certification is a key component in the development of effective and practical Building Renovation Passports. By linking ECMs with the right professionals and registers where they can be found, the project is creating a clear, user-friendly system for homeowners to navigate deep renovations with confidence.
Looking ahead, the One Click Reno Tool will integrate these findings, ensuring that homeowners across Europe can easily access verified, skilled professionals for their renovation projects. Additionally, a detailed report will be made available, allowing other countries and stakeholders to adopt and adapt this methodology to their own contexts.
With each step, One Click Reno moves closer to its goal: making deep renovations simpler, more accessible, and more effective across Europe.
